SERVICE CANADA: Yes, by law, Service Canada is required to send you a formal letter in writing explaining the exact legal reasons if they decide to suspend, modify, or withhold your CPP or OAS pension. Legally, they cannot suspend your money without providing you with a written explanation and without giving you the right to appeal the decision.

Damn! For five months, Service Canada has been withholding both pensions granted to senior citizens without any justification. I have received no notification explaining the reason or reasons the government or its employees are using to make this arbitrary decision. Well, after decades of exhaustive research in my work as an activist, I've learned that regimes in power have tried to cover up the sinister massacres of children, and now more than ever they are trying to cover up the brutal treatment they are committing against the elderly, for which they are using Canada's capital punishment, the bloody murder called euthanasia.

Hyperconnectivity has ceased to be just a habit and has become a public health problem. A new report reveals that one in five minors in the Canary Islands presents symptoms of anxiety or depression related to the intensive use of social media and mobile phones. But behind these figures there are not only individual choices: there is also a business model that turns the attention, emotions, and personal data of millions of young people into a constant source of profit.

One in five minors in the Canary Islands presents symptoms of anxiety or depression related to the intensive use of mobile phones and social media. The situation is even more worrying when analyzing the risk of suicide, which affects 11.2% of young people in the archipelago, well above the national average. These are some of the conclusions of the report "Childhood, Adolescence, and Digital Well-being," prepared by UNICEF Spain in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela, Red.es, and the General Council of Computer Engineering.

The study, conducted with a sample of 1,460 students from the Canary Islands between the ages of 10 and 20, paints a picture that transcends the educational sphere, becoming a genuine public health problem. It's not just about how much time teenagers spend in front of a screen, but about the model of social relationships and consumption that major digital platforms have built around them.

Mental health: the hidden price of hyperconnectivity

The vast majority of minors in the Canary Islands already own a mobile phone. The average age of access is just 10.69 years, and almost all maintain an active presence on social media from a very young age. More than 87% use three or more platforms, and a significant portion dedicate more than five hours a day to them on weekends.

Social media has ceased to be a simple communication tool and has become the primary space where teenagers construct their identity, seek recognition, and establish personal relationships. As Antonio Rial, the study's scientific director, explained during the presentation, "the reign of the 'like' is a veritable emotional crusher."

This statement encapsulates a reality confirmed by the data: the constant pursuit of digital approval ultimately generates anxiety, frustration, and a significant loss of psychological well-being.

The consequences are also reflected in other indicators of the report. Pornography consumption is starting at increasingly younger ages: almost 44% of minors in the Canary Islands admit to having accessed this content at some point, and some do so even during primary school. The phenomenon of sexting—the exchange of digital sexual content—also shows high figures, while access to gambling and games of chance continues to affect thousands of teenagers despite being prohibited for minors.

Added to this are other forms of digital violence. Cyberbullying continues to affect a significant portion of the student population, and more than a third of young people report having experienced controlling behavior within romantic relationships through mobile phones or social media. Technology doesn't create these forms of violence, but it does amplify them, eliminating the spaces for disconnection that previously existed outside of school hours.

A Business Based on Capturing Attention

Reducing this problem to a supposed individual inability of young people to control their mobile phone use would be a mistake. Digital platforms are not designed to promote balanced consumption, but rather to keep users connected for as long as possible. Every notification, every recommended video, and every endless scroll is part of an architecture designed to capture attention.

Human attention, in effect, has become a commodity. The longer a person remains connected, the more data they generate, and the greater the economic benefit that large technology companies obtain through personalized advertising and the commercial exploitation of that information. Teenagers are one of the most valuable sectors for this business because they are especially active users and more vulnerable to the psychological mechanisms of immediate reward used by algorithms.

The disparity between boys and girls is particularly worrying. The risk of suicide is almost three times higher for girls than for boys, reaching 16.6% of adolescent girls. Constant pressure regarding body image, perpetual comparison, and the search for approval on social media affect young women much more intensely. They have also become prime targets for industries that thrive on exploiting personal insecurities to sell products, lifestyles, and unattainable beauty standards.

Education is necessary, but not sufficient.

The report highlights the importance of family mediation and digital literacy. Undoubtedly, both are essential. However, the problem can hardly be solved by appealing solely to the responsibility of parents or teachers as long as these platforms continue to operate under a logic exclusively focused on profit.

When the primary objective is to increase screen time to boost advertising revenue, users' mental health inevitably takes a back seat. Algorithms are not programmed to protect children or foster healthy social relationships, but rather to maximize screen time. That is the logic of capitalism, which large technology companies inevitably apply to the digital world: turning attention, emotions, and personal data into a permanent source of private profit.

In this context, the measures announced by the Canary Islands Government, such as the incorporation of psychology professionals into schools and the strengthening of protocols against bullying and suicide risk, are positive steps forward. But they also highlight a contradiction: while public administrations are allocating ever-increasing public resources to repair the damage, large platforms continue to reap enormous profits through business models that precisely encourage this hyperconnectivity.

The data available in the Canary Islands, which can undoubtedly be extrapolated to most countries with access to these technologies, serve as a serious warning: the mental health of new generations may be one of the heavy prices that society pays for a digital model designed to maximize profits at any cost.

The established powers designed educational systems, structured the economy, and shaped forms of political organization aimed at perpetuating privileges and presenting inequalities as natural and inevitable phenomena. Capital has been elevated to the status of the supreme end, while human beings and nature have been relegated to the condition of mere instruments of accumulation.

In this scenario, patriots who place life above commodities wage a profoundly unequal battle. They are forced to act within institutions conceived under the logic of competition, individualism, and the concentration of wealth. Frequently, they are required to transform reality using tools designed to protect the very interests that produce exclusion and exploitation. This is the enduring contradiction for those who aspire to build a different society using instruments designed to preserve the existing order.

However, history demonstrates that no structure of domination is eternal. Civilizations change when human beings are capable of imagining new horizons and creating the material, cultural, and spiritual conditions that make their realization possible. True revolution does not consist solely of conquering political power; it consists, above all, of establishing new forms of coexistence, new institutions, and new human relationships, where economic development is subordinate to the care of life, and not the other way around.

Profound transformations arise from a new culture, capable of making fraternity, shared responsibility, and the care of life everyday practices.

Humanity is experiencing a crisis that is not merely economic; it is, above all, an ethical and civilizational crisis. The destruction of ecosystems, wars, racism, exclusion, and the obscene concentration of wealth reveal the exhaustion of a model that has placed profit above the care of existence. Faced with this reality, the need arises to build a new rationality, founded on the interdependence of human beings and on a respectful relationship with nature.

Ancestral peoples and communities that have historically made solidarity a form of resistance possess an indispensable wisdom for our time. They remind us that no one is saved alone; that the earth is not a commodity, but a generous mother; and that individual happiness loses its meaning when the community suffers.

Dreaming of a different society is not naive; it is an act of rebellion, of historical responsibility, and of hope. The great transformations of humanity have always been born from women and men who refused to accept injustice as their destiny and decided to build alternative paths. The future belongs to those who are capable of creating institutions that serve life, economies oriented toward the common good, and cultures where solidarity forms the foundation of social relations.

 My social activism began in Toronto in 1976, the year I offered my selfless support to a group of Chilean and Cuban activists. I worked with them for several years before joining the progressive social justice group "People's Front." 

 

 Later, at the suggestion of activists, I began to support the marches organized by the "Ontario Coalition Against Poverty." But my disillusionment reached its peak when a march took place in downtown Toronto with three leaders at the head of the group and nearly a hundred shirtless people accompanying them, chanting clear slogans. 

 

 That day, dozens of my companions were arrested and the next day had to appear before a judge at the Old City Hall, while the cowardly leaders of the march, John Clarke and his two subordinates, sat comfortably in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. They were advised by lawyers who work in the Bay Street district, the wealthiest area of ​​Toronto. 

 

The three manipulative leaders of the previous day's march didn't care that the homeless people didn't know why they were pleading guilty in the Old City Hall courtrooms without even the assistance of a lawyer on duty, working for the most corrupt and rotten court in the province of Ontario.

Driven by profit, the media capitalize on the public’s fascination with crime, using shock value to expand their audience base. Reporting often emphasizes sensationalism over context, subtly shaping how citizens view crime rates, police effectiveness, and who is seen as “criminal.” The same issues apply to the coverage of crime in most print and electronic media.

Conversely, responsible crime reporting prioritizes context over shock. The mindset that “if it bleeds, it leads” has no problem distorting facts to provoke fear and emotion, leaving citizens powerless against unfair portrayals.

A tragic case: an elderly man was imprisoned and held incommunicado in his own home, separated from his friends and community, abused for years both physically and emotionally, stripped of his money and belongings, and, with the help of the Toronto police through false accusations, forced to leave his home. The complaint was brought to the attention of the police, other authorities, and medical staff at Toronto Western Hospital. Members of the Toronto Police Service (11th Division) are aware of the case of physical abuse and psychological torture to which Mr. Antonio Lopes was subjected for years. 

 As usual, the police are complicit in the impunity surrounding the criminal acts committed by feminists who engage in theft and extortion of the elderly. I demand that Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair order a thorough investigation into this case of misappropriation of property and money.
