Introduction
to society
By Elizabeth H. Elys : According to sociologist, a society
is a group of people with common territory, interaction and culture.
People of same society share aspects of their culture, such
as language or beliefs.
Culture refers to the language, value, beliefs, behavior and
material objects that constitute a people’s way of life. It is a defining
element of society.
The United States and Canada is society composed of many
groups of people, some of whom originally belonged to other societies. We call
this mentioned a pluralistic SOCIETY, meaning it is built of many groups.
As societies modernize, they attract people from different
countries, where there may be economic hardship, political unrest or religious
persecution.
Many people came to USA and Canada between the mid-19th
and mid-20th centuries. Fleeing and religious persecution, these immigrants
from Europe and Asia helped create the pluralism. In pluralistic societies, groups do not have to give up all
of their former believes and practices. Many groups within a pluralistic society
retain their ethnic traditions.
In 19th century anthropologists began compiling
detailed description of primitive societies, African, North American Indian,
Polynesian and many others.Primitive Culture refers to a society believed to lack
cultural, technological, or economic sophistication or development.
Medieval Society was governed by laws, it had rules, and the
people had rights and obligations. There was a legal framework of land tenure,
taxation and fiscal immunities. The Feudal system had laws regarding the
relationship between lords and peasants and between the SEIGNEURS and the
monarch.
Any society requires some sort of army force and the Middle
Ages one is no different.
Military organization was based on the corps of hereditary
aristocracy and their household, but also including bodies of professional
soldiers. In medieval society the CHURCH played a huge role.
A SOCIETY – is generally considered modern when it is
industrialized. Other factors include literacy, being a nation-state and urbanization. The term “traditional Society refers to community that is
deeply rooted in the past and often engaged in ritualistic or customary
practices.
The good life is possible only through society. Society is a
natural institution. Man is essentially a social and political animal.
According to Plato, the aim of the good society is neither freedom, nor
economic well-being. The aim of the good society is Justice. Justice is an
object of knowledge. Education must be for everyone, is the most important,
(the true and the good) this will be most conducive to the good society.
Plato’s book REPUBLIC was written in approximately 380 BC.
Applying his notions of a justice
SOCIETY, Plato claimed to construct an “ideal city.”
